Chapter Ten
Fresh off the flight to New Orleans, I sat with Matt, my best friend and offensive coordinator, in the hotel bar. It was classy and quiet, lots of traditional gold decor all around us.
âAre we moving?â Matt asked after ordering an old-fashioned.
âYeah, you dumbass. Itâs called the Carousel Bar. The bar is moving in a slow circle.â
âOh, cool.â He looked around, eyeballing the street of the French Quarter outside the bar window. Despite the heat, people were walking up and down Royal Street. âToo bad we canât hit the town tonight.â
âYeah, that sucks.â Not really. I didnât care about hitting the town at all. I cared about what was going on back in my apartment in New York. I had a pit in my gut thinking about Dakota and my daughters hanging out for the first time without me. I was feeling left out, to be totally honest. I was also a little worried what might come out of Dakotaâs mouth. She was impulsive.
âAnother day, another nanny, huh?â Matt shook his head. âHave you ever thought about bribing your parents to move in with you? That might be easier.â
âMy parents have no interest in living in New York. Trust me, I asked them. I was informed they love me and my children but they love San Diego too and theyâre entitled to live their own life. Thatâs a direct quote.â I didnât blame them for that. They did deserve to live their life the way they wanted.
âDamn. The Macnamaras are holding tough.â
âMy sister did offer for the girls to move in with her in Texas, but I canât stand the thought of not seeing them all the time. Really not being the one raising them. Besides, it would open up a fucking can of worms with Bridget. She always hated my sister.â
âI donât know what I would do without Shelly,â Matt said. âYou know sheâs the glue in our house. Iâd be lost without her.â
Matt had been happily married for ten years. âWay to rub it in, asshole.â
He made a face. âSorry, man.â Then he grinned. âBut maybe if you werenât such a prick, you could find someone.â
âYouâre so right,â I said dryly, thanking the bartender when he set my bourbon down on the bartop. One drink was my limit, so I had to savor it. âI slept with the nanny,â I told Matt.
Carson was the only one who knew and he was not known for his understanding nature.
Matt choked on his drink. âWhat? Which one?â
âThe new one. I had sex with her first, then hired her to be my nanny. Sheâs a team cheerleader.â
Matt ran a hand over his mostly bald head and gave me an incredulous look. âAre you fucking insane?â
âIt seems that way. To be fair, Poppy offered her the nanny position. I just didnât object.â
âIs she hot? Wait. Stupid question. Sheâs a cheerleader, of course sheâs hot.â
âSheâs got legs for miles, man. Fucking miles.â I took one first sip of bourbon, needing to feel the burn.
